Myths Monsters and Magic

So, what is cryptozoology? Is it real?

Well the answers are simpler than you think.

Cryptozoology is the study of hidden animals. So why are they considered hidden?  There could be several reasons why these animals are hidden or have not been previously identified by science.

  1. they could have a very small population.
  2. they could live in a very isolated part of the world and don't come in contact with humans often.
  3. they could be a new species.
  4. they could be an animal that was thought to be extinct.
  5. they could be inaccessible to humans such as at the bottom of the ocean.
  6. they maybe known locally, but have never been scientifically classified.

Some past examples of these are mountain gorillas, the coelacanth, platypus, giant panda's and hairy rhinoceros. This list is always growing. Recent examples discovered in 2021 include the Rice Whale, Yellow King Penguin and Yellow Lobster.

Cryptozoology uses several disciplines such as the study of myths, folklore, zoology, combined with motion-sensitive cameras, night-vision equipment, and audio-recording equipment to track down these hidden animals.

Then there are those animals that have been reported all over the world, but never scientifically identified, such as bigfoot, and the Loch Ness monster. Versions of these animals are documented on multiple continents, and go by many names. In the United States we call him bigfoot or sasquatch, but he has well over a hundred different names amongst the native tribes of north and south America. In Nepal it is Yeti, in Australia it is Yowie, in Central China it is the Gin-Sung and in Spain it is Basajaun. This also the case for the Loch Ness monster, especially here in North America. We have Champ in Lake Champlain, Vermont, Bessie in Lake Erie, and Ogopogo in Okanagan Lake, British Columbia. All of these animals are known as Cryptids.
